My Story: Kelly Tatum
Massage Therapist Yoga Teacher Hydra Yoga Therapy
Interim Development Lupin Co-op

Dear fellow Lupiner,

My heart has never felt more full than tonight for all the precious souls which call Lupin home. When I came to the Bay Area in 2016 my marriage was failing and I couldn't get my small business started back up as easily as I thought. I was so alone.

Lupin was the place where I could escape into the leaves and sunny hillside. It was a little slice of paradise 12 minutes from Cupertino... If you haven’t smelled a California Bay leaf before, the smell is intoxicating, and the enormous succulents fascinated me. It was like something out of a dinosaur park.

There is a house at Lupin, cabin 9. It has two wrap around decks and at least 7 skylights. I had dreamed about where I would put all my furniture nightly, it gave me comfort in my very sad and confusing times.

A few months after my divorce my landlord needed his house back to give to his daughter. I was nervous because I was self employed and didn’t have a pay stub. I saw that cabin 9 was available and thought, this must be fate. I turned my application in to Lori, the owner, and I remember sitting down with her and saying, “I don’t have any paystub.” and she said, “It’s ok we’ll work it out.” And I said, “But I don’t have any family in the area to sign for me.” And she said… "We’ll be your family now… We’ll watch out for you.”

This park has been a safe haven myself and many young artistic women. It’s allowed us independence, a place to go after spurned relationships. It’s allowed our friend and Director to use her talents and time with us and other non-profits in the non-profit sector. Low overhead allows my neighbor to be a nurse in this area, my next door neighbor is a vet clinician. Living outside town and in a gated community provides protection, management are responsive to any reports of discomfort. This area, and Los Gatos in particular, is slipping into a dystopia where there is no place to be freely authentic, no place to live independently. We must keep this slice of paradise open to the public and we must keep every vulnerable low-income resident safe from displacement.

Thank you for your time,

Kelly

Where the magic happens…

Therapy Pools are the Key to Establishing Lupin's Future:

1. Body positivity and hot tubs go hand in hand. Currently, the pool space is underutilized, with only one 5-person tub. To meet the demands of our demographic, we plan to add three therapy pools heated to a variety of cozy temperatures, complete with interesting water features. This addition will encourage what our target market naturally seeks and maximize seasonal revenue.

2. By establishing a unique subculture we create stronger brand identity, increased loyalty, authentic marketing and organic growth and partnerships with similar eco-spiritual non-profits can help us achieve it. We plan to reinstate partnerships with sister organizations such as Harbin Hot Springs, Laguna del Sol, and Sierra Hot Springs. By offering seasonal passes or cross-promotional literature that work at all the resorts, we can expand our subculture's tourism. We will also collaborate with Harbin Hot Springs' Watsu (R) instructors to create programming that expands the eco-spiritual principles of breath-movement, body positivity and "bodhichitta", altruistic spiritual compassion.

Secrets in the forest…

TLDW?
Kelly describes a friendly rivalry between herself and our non-profit lawyer friend Paola to pick the best mushrooms in the forest. Lupin Co-op dreams of specializing in mushrooms and is encouraging public participation in the initiative.
